The White House confirmed the start of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for terminating staff.

While the official did not specify which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the moves in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide essential functions to communities nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a Republican-backed legislation to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be resolved soon.

During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the administration have failed to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate said.
