French authorities to begin intercepting migrant vessels in English Channel following UK pressure
French officials have consented to begin stopping small boats in the Channel, following an extended period of pressure from the UK.
The change in policy comes after the British leader wrote to the President urging him to back the plan and saying there presently "have no effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French security forces have been authorized to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French police have infrequently intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both officers and civilians.
"It is crucial that we deploy these methods this month... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel."
Currently, a French naval police spokesperson states officers will start intervening at sea, with the aim of protecting lives.
Significantly, the spokesperson excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had previously been suggested as a possible method to disable the propellers of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a major advancement, coming after a brief shift towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which ceased when the previous Interior Minister departed from government.
That was highlighted in July, preceding a summit between the UK leader and President, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Now French authorities will again be permitted to intercept boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the coastal areas of France's north coast, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are presently delaying the start of interceptions and the human trafficking networks will be seeking ways to adjust to avoid interception, as they have done so often in the past.
