Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such treatments must be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
